JOB SUMMARY:
•The Firefighter / Driver-Operator (D/O) is responsible for responding to and mitigating fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies. This position includes driving and operating fire apparatus, performing fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical tasks, and participating in fire prevention and public education activities. The role ensures the readiness of all assigned apparatus, equipment, and personnel while adhering to NFPA, DoD, and organizational standards
DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Emergency Response & Fire Suppression
•Respond to structural, aircraft, wildland, shipboard, and vehicle fires, hazardous material incidents, and medical emergencies.
•Drive and operate fire apparatus (pumper, ARFF, water tender, ladder truck) following NAVFAC P-300 and OPNAVINST 5100.12 requirements.
•Perform fire suppression, rescue operations, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
•Conduct hydraulic calculations and apply proper pump operations during fireground activities.
•Administer emergency medical care as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Technician (EMT) following department SOPs.
•Participate in standby operations for aircraft landing/takeoff, pier standby, and shipboard fire protection
Apparatus & Equipment Maintenance
•Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of fire apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
•Perform operator-level preventive maintenance, document deficiencies, and coordinate corrective maintenance.
•Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies on apparatus.
Fire Prevention & Training
•Participate in fire inspections, pre-incident planning, and life-safety surveys to identify and correct hazards.
•Assist in delivering fire prevention education and training to personnel and the public.
•Participate in fire department drills, live-fire exercises, and annual skills evaluations.
Administrative & Compliance Duties
•Maintain accurate records of emergency responses, training, inspections, and apparatus status.
•Operate fire alarm receiving equipment and two-way radio systems in compliance with SOPs.
•Support department compliance with organizational metrics and contract requirements.
•Communicate effectively and professionally with team members, leadership, and external stakeholders.
Other duties
•Perform additional assignments as directed by the Crew Chief, Station Chief, or Command Staff.
•Support continuous improvement initiatives and promote a positive safety culture.
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
•Must pass the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) annually and participate in the DoDI 6055.06 Physical Fitness Program.
•Must hold and maintain licensing in accordance with NAVFAC P-300, OPNAVINST 5100.12.
•Must be certified in the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) and Airfield Vehicle Operator Course (AVOC) and obtain a government driver’s license.
•Demonstrated ability to apply firefighter knowledge and skills in compliance with NFPA and DoD standards.
•Ability to operate under high-stress, hazardous conditions while wearing full PPE and SCBA.
•Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills with the ability to interact with multinational staff and military officials.
•Computer literacy with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for reporting and documentation.
•Must pass annual Occupational Health Exam and SCBA Fit Testing IAW NFPA 1500, 1582, and 1583.
•Must pass overseas medical screening and be in good health.
•Must be CAC-eligible and able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC)
JOB SPECIFICATIONS: SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS OR TRAINING
Must meet DoD Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) Minimum Qualification Standards and contract requirements:
•DoD/IFSAC/Pro Board: Firefighter I & II
•DoD/IFSAC/Pro Board: Airport Firefighter
•DoD/IFSAC/Pro Board: Driver/Operator – ARFF, Pumper
•DoD/IFSAC/Pro Board: HAZMAT Awareness & HAZMAT Operations (with Mission-Specific Competencies, PPE, and Product Control)
•Adult First Aid / CPR / AED (American Red Cross or equivalent)
•Emergency Management Institute (FEMA): IS-100, IS-200, IS-300, IS-400, IS-700, IS-800
•National Registry EMR/EMT (or acceptable DoD equivalent)
Recommended additional certifications:
•Driver/Operator – Mobile Water Supply (Tanker) (IFSAC/Pro Board)
•Driver/Operator – Aerial Apparatus (IFSAC/Pro Board)
EDUCATION:
•High school diploma required.
•Associate or bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field preferred
